Compared to the giant cylinders of skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle cells, or cardiomyocytes, are significantly shorter with a lot smaller diameters. As well as, the sarcoplasmic reticulum shops few calcium ions, so a lot of the calcium ions should come from exterior the cells.
