Compared to the giant cylinders of skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle cells, or cardiomyocytes, are significantly shorter with a lot smaller diameters. Cardiac muscle also demonstrates striations, the alternating sample of dark A bands and mild I bands attributed to the exact arrangement of the myofilaments and fibrils which can be organized in sarcomeres alongside the length of the cell (Figure 19.17a). These contractile elements are nearly an identical to skeletal muscle. T (transverse) tubules penetrate from the surface plasma membrane, the sarcolemma, to the inside of the cell, allowing the electrical impulse to achieve the inside. The T tubules are only found at the Z discs, whereas in skeletal muscle, they're found on the junction of the A and that i bands. Therefore, there are one-half as many T tubules in cardiac muscle as in skeletal muscle. As well as, the sarcoplasmic reticulum shops few calcium ions, so a lot of the calcium ions should come from exterior the cells.
